Doctor optimistic about recovery of comatose journalist

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan -- The doctor attending a photojournalist who lapsed into a coma after falling from a moving car while covering a campaign rally in Kaohsiung City expressed optimism yesterday about the photojournalist’s recovery following brain surgery the previous night.

Hung Chun-lung, the head of the surgical team at Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital who operated on Hong Hong’s Asia Television photojournalist Li Dongjie, said Li’s condition was stable following the surgery.

Hung said the severity of Li’s coma after undergoing surgery was at level 8 on the 3 to 15 point Glasgow Coma Scale, with 3 being the worst condition and 15 being that of a normal person.

He further said that after Li’s brain swelling reduces, he will determine whether to remove him from life support, adding that Li was under close observation in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Hung also pointed out that there are many signs that make him optimistic about Li’s recovery.

Lee was covering a campaign rally of the main opposition Kuomintang (KMT) when he fell from a car that was driving in front of a vehicle in which KMT presidential candidate Ma Ying-jeou, KMT legislative candidate Huang Chao-shun and Ma’s campaign manager Chan Chi hsien were traveling.

Ma’s car stopped as soon as the accident happened and Chan, a surgeon and former president of Chi Mei Hospital, ran to administer first aid to Lee while awaiting the arrival of an ambulance.
