Giant rocking horse expected to set world record constructed in Yilan

TAIPEI -- A township in the northeastern county of Yilan unveiled Monday a 4.5-ton giant rocking horse that is expected to set a new world record.

The horse, which took four months to complete, measures 8.3 meters long, 3.1 meters wide and 6.5 meters tall, and is 10 times the size of an ordinary rocking horse, Sanshing township chief Huang Hsi-yung said.

It will challenge the Guinness World Record as the world's largest rocking horse, a title currently held by an Israeli horse, Huang said.

He said the horse was originally designed with a width of 2.67 meters but was deliberately expanded to 3.1 meters to beat the Israeli record-holder, which measures 7.6 meters by 3.22 meters by 6.1 meters.

Erected in the middle of a field of coreopsis flowers, the horse will officially be put on public display Jan. 22 to celebrate the upcoming Year of the Horse, which begins Jan. 31, township officials said.

The exhibition will run through March 2.
