Hero fireman still missing in Yilan after rescue attempt

ILAN, Taiwan -- A fireman was missing after trying to save a drowning woman at a beach in Yilan County on Wednesday.

The drowned woman, surnamed Lin, went with a couple of friends to the beach at Suao Township in Yilan and after going into the water, she was washed away by a surging tide, according to the chief of a local fire bureau.

After Lin's friends called the fire department for help, two firemen arrived and went into the sea to search for her. Unfortunately, both of them were washed away by the huge waves.

One of the firemen was saved by the coast guard and sent to the hospital. The other one, Zhang Qi-yan is still missing, said the chief.

Hundreds of soldiers and volunteers joined the search operations which also involved a helicopter.

The victims were still missing yesterday and the chief said the rescue team will keep looking.

The fire bureau warned that the beach in Nanfangao of Yilan County was on the list of dangerous areas and recently the sea tide had surged because of Typhoon Lupit. Visitors and local residents are advised not to come to the beach.
