Two die in seas off Kungliao near Yilan

YILAN, Taiwan -- Two men died in the seas off Kungliao near Yilan yesterday.

Police said one of them drowned while snorkeling. The other was a freshman diver.

The snorkeler, identified only by his family name of Pan, hit his head on a rock after being engulfed in a wave, police investigators said.

A friend who snorkeled with Pan was quoted as saying the seas were rough. But they snorkeled anyway.

“I saw him trapped,” he told police investigators. “But I couldn't do anything to help him,” he added.

After his body was recovered, Pan showed no signs of life. He was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

Lin, the other man drowned, rented an aqua lung at Kungliao for diving.

He dived but bobbed up a few minutes later, calling for help, a diving coach told investigators.

With the help of other divers, the coach was able to pull Lin ashore. “He was dead,” the coach was quoted as telling police.

The unlucky diver was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
