Yilan wins right to host 2009 Asian Rowing tourney

YILAN, Taiwan -- Yilan County recently won the right to host the 14th Asian Rowing Championship to be held next year, the county’s Bureau of Education said yesterday.

The rowing championship is slated to be held at the Dongshan River Water Park in Wujie township from Nov. 2-9, 2009, according to the bureau.

The bureau and the Chinese Taipei Amateur Rowing Association sent representatives to an Asian Rowing Federation meeting held in Hong Kong on Nov. 8 to bid against Singapore for the right to host the championship.

The more than 20 member countries attending the meeting voted to award Yilan the right to host the games after county officials gave a presentation introducing the Dongshan River Water Park’s facilities and environment, the bureau said.

The Asian Rowing Championship is held every two years. Yilan hosted the 7th Asian Rowing Championship in 1995 — also at the Dongshan River Water Park.
