TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A man, surnamed Lin, yesterday was sent to Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital (花蓮慈濟醫院) following an accident whereby the man was hit by a Tze-Chiang Limited Express (自強號) train while on duty as a maintenance cleaner.
Reportedly, while taking a break from working at the Taiwan Railways Administration's (TRA) Hualien Locomotive Maintenance Depot around 3 p.m., Lin was distracted while on his cell phone, and did not realize that a Tze-Chiang Limited Express was going in reverse down the tracks.
Lin allegedly began walking on the tracks while on his cell phone toward the train. Maintenance depot personnel on the scene said that Lin remained oblivious to their warnings.
Following the collision, the maintenance cleaner was irresponsive while workers called for an ambulance. According to Dr. Yao Ting-kuo (姚定國) of Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital's trauma department, Lin at one point went into shock while showing no sign of a pulse.
