TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Police and prosecutors said yesterday that the grandparents of a 9-year-old girl who died in a jet skiing accident off Hualien County as well as the man who rode the Jet Ski are suspected of manslaughter.
During a family outing on the coast of Hualien on Sunday, July 20, the grandparents agreed to their five grandchildren's request to get on a man's Jet Ski. None of them were given lifejackets. Given that there were too many on the vehicle, an accident quickly ensued, causing four of the five children to fall in the water. Three were rescued while the 9-year-old drowned.
Prosecutors said that the man, surnamed Wu, who operated the Jet Ski has a license for operating the vehicle, and that the grandparents have expressed a willingness to forgive Wu.
Prosecutors added, however, that according to preliminary investigations, the grandparents and Wu are deemed suspects of manslaughter.
