The China Post news staff--The Hualien District Court yesterday ordered the detainment of a woman and her boyfriend in connection with the suspected murder of the woman's mother.
The case began when the body of a woman was found on May 4 at the point where Maogong River in the eastern county meets the sea. The body was found with its hands and feet bound, with wire wound around the neck. Investigators suspected the woman was murdered but were unable to determine her identity.
The Fenglin Police Department afterward received tipoffs about a missing woman and found a connection to the possible murder case. Police then targeted the woman's daughter, surnamed Tsai, and her boyfriend, surnamed Tseng, whom they believed to be linked to the death. Both were arrested and transferred to the Hualien Prosecutors' Office.
According to prosecutors, the two denied any involvement and refused to undergo nighttime questioning. Prosecutors then requested that they be held in custody, claiming the two were flight risks and may collude with others.
A court session reviewing the request was held yesterday, where the judges granted the request. According to the judges, Tsai deflected prosecutors' questions and spoke about how she was abused by her father as a child and how her mother might have been killed by her father.
Her boyfriend, Tseng, was silent through most of the hearing and appeared calm and composed.
