Taroko Gorge Marathon to add 500 runners this Nov.

TAIPEI--The 2011 Taroko Gorge Marathon slated to take place Nov. 5 in eastern Taiwan's famous scenic spot is set to receive more runners this year, organizers said Sunday.

The organizers said they expect to admit up to 10,500 participants in this year's run, 500 more than last year.

The annual event takes place in the eastern county of Hualien, a must-see attraction for domestic and international tourists.

Potential runners can start to register for the race in mid-August, National Taroko Park Administration officials said.

Each participant can sign up for one of three runs: a total of 7,500 runners will vie for the title in the full marathon and the half-marathon, while another 3,000 runners will be able to register for a 5-kilometer fun run.

Moreover, to celebrate the annual race's 12th year, the program notes will feature 100 short stories and photos of the previous Taroko Gorge Marathons.
