Updated Wednesday, July 21, 2010 9:58 am TWN, CNA Charity wins consultant status from ECOSCOHer Rey-sheng said the designation, made by the ECOSCO in New York July 19, is confirmation of the foundation's charity activities in more than 70 countries around the world. With this Non-Government Organization (NGO)in Special Consultative status, the spokesman said, the foundation will be able to participate in the economic and social development activities of the council, providing relevant advice and information to representatives of the United Nations system, member states and civil society. It will also have access to various ECOSCO meetings, will be able offer its opinions in writing or orally, while Tzu Chi's charity activities around the world will be protected by the U.N., according to the foundation's announcement. Consultative relationships with the ECOSCO can be established with international, regional, sub-regional and national non-government, non-profit public or voluntary organizations that make significant contributions to the work of the ECOSCO or its subsidiaries. Currently, more than 3,200 NGOs have consultative status with the ECOSCO. Founded in 1966 by Buddhist Master Cheng Yen in Hualien, Tzu Chi was set up to help the poor and relieve suffering. Over time, the foundation's mission has extended into medicine, education, and humanistic culture, and boasts chapters and offices in 47 countries around the world.
