Moderate earthquake strikes off east coast

TAIPEI -- A 5.4-magnitude earthquake hit off Taiwan's east coast yesterday, the central weather bureau said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

No tsunami warning was immediately issued.

The quake struck at 5:04 p.m. about 47.3 kilometers (30 miles) off eastern Hualien City, with the epicenter at a depth of 42 kilometers undersea.

Taiwan is regularly hit by earthquakes as the island lies near the junction of two tectonic plates.
