Two die and one injured in Hualien car accident

HUALIEN, Taiwan -- Two people were killed and another seriously injured after their car smashed into a tree and an electricity pole during heavy rain in Hualien yesterday, police said.

The driver, surnamed Cho, and a teenage girl, surnamed Teng, who were sitting in the front, were taken to hospital but pronounced dead on arrival, police said.

Another teenage passenger, surnamed Wang, remains in a critical condition, the police added.

Cho was driving fast down a bridge at the Kuangfu section along Provincial Freeway No. 9 when she made a right turn and lost control of the car, police said.
