Debt-ridden man attempts suicide and kills one son

HUALIEN, Taiwan -- A debt-ridden man, surname Lien, killed his young son and tried to kill himself and his other son, by burning charcoal in their home.

Lien, age 36, fed his two sons, aged 10 and 12, insecticides before burning charcoal in their home in Sioulin Township, Hualien County, yesterday. He and his elder son, who climbed out of the house and asked for help, are now in intensive care. Lien raised his two sons alone after a divorce. He could not get a proper job and was an alcoholic. He was unable to pay off heavy debts even after he sold his property.
