Tourist injured by falling rock in Toroko Gorge

HUALIEN, Taiwan -- A Chinese tourist is in critical condition after she was hit by a falling stone yesterday while visiting the Taroko National Park in Hualien, media reported.

The woman, surnamed Wang, 28, sustained a serious head injury after she was hit by a falling stone yesterday while visiting the Taroko National Park in Hualien.

She was rushed to a hospital in the eastern county, but remained in a critical condition as of yesterday night.

A hospital official stated that no surgeries could be performed on Wang due to the severity of the head injury.

Wang actually wore a helmet during her walk inside the famous Chiouchu tunnels at the Taroko Gorge, where some similar accidents have occurred in the past. However, she was hit by the stone at about 2 p.m. after she took her helmet off before boarding the tour bus, the site was temporarily closed after the accident.

Hualien County Magistrate visited the victim at the hospital.

But the park administration said it was an isolated incident and it has no plans to close the caves permanently.

The woman arrived in Taiwan with a tour group from Shenyang in northeastern China.
