Siblings split by adoption reunited after five decades

HUALIEN, Taiwan -- Two sisters were separated by adoption fifty years ago, but even this long amount of time could not keep them separated forever.

Chu Mei-erh, 51, and Lin Mei-chen, 56, sisters by birth, were separated five decades ago because their parents were too poor to care for both of them.

Lin was given out when she was five, while Chu remained in the care of her parents. Somehow yesterday, more than half a century later, the two were reunited in Hualien, Chinese-language media reported.

To the surprise of everybody, the biological siblings have lived only four blocks away from each other and have worked only two streets apart all their lives. They did not discover this until a neighbor finally mentioned their striking resemblance.

One day when Lin went to practice croquet with Chu’s neighbor, surnamed Chang, the latter decided to introduce them to each other.

“You really look alike,” insisted Chang, before calling Chu’s house.

“What was the name of your father,” asked Chu, who also inquired about the name of Lin’s mother, eventually realizing they were siblings.
