CIB extradites wanted criminal from Vietnam to face charges of fraud

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) recently extradited a suspect wanted on fraud charges from Vietnam.

The CIB's International Criminal Affairs Division said the suspect, surnamed Lai, posed as a Vietnamese police officer and is involved in a number of fraud schemes in the Southeast Asian country.

The bureau said the suspect, was convicted of attempted murder in 2005 and convicted of offenses against personal freedom in 2008. The Hsinchu District Court (新竹地院) sentenced Lai to five years and eight months in prison, the CIB said.

The bureau said, however, that after Lai filed an appeal against the ruling, he fled to mainland China in November 2008 and later moved to Vietnam. Lai was put on the wanted list in July 2009, the CIB added.

The CIB went on to say that the Vietnamese authorities arrested Lai in Ho Chi Minh City on April 12 on fraud charges, noting that after communicating with Vietnamese police, a CIB officer stationed in Vietnam escorted Lai back to Taiwan on April 18.

After arriving at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, Lai was transferred to the Hsinchu District Prosecutors' Office for further investigation, the bureau said.
