Hsinchu City seeks apology from HSR

HSINCHU, Taiwan -- Hsinchu City Mayor, Hsu Ming-Tsai(許明財), announced yesterday that the city is seeking an official apology from the Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation (THSRC), for ranking “betel nut girls” as a must-visit attraction in Hsinchu.

According to Hsu, the city does not agree with an article in the January issue of THSRC's free magazine, which listed “betel nut girls” on Hsinchu's Zhongua Road, among the city's top five must-see tourist attractions.

The mayor said that the Taiwanese custom of using scantily-clad young women to sell betel nuts is not exclusive to Hsinchu City. In addition he said that Hsinchu does not rank among Taiwan's top cities for the number of betel nut users.

In response, Chung Tao-ming (鍾道明), a spokesperson for THSRC, said the company will work to improve the magazine content. He added that only one sentence mentioned “betel nut girls” in the controversial article.

According to Hsinchu City Police Department Commissioner, Lee Chin-ten(李金田), vendors on Zhonghua Road do not employ many scantily-dressed girls compared to those in other sections in the city. He added that most “betel nut girls” in revealing dresses are seen on Sections One and Two of Jingguo Road.

There are currently 20 areas under police regulation, including Jingguo Road, Zhonghua Road, Guangfu Road and Ciyun Road, said Lee. He added that the city police will strictly enforce laws on any “betel nut girls” in revealing clothes.
