Updated Thursday, November 19, 2009 9:33 am TWN, The China Post news staff Missing boy found drowned in NCTU lakeOne of the school's cleaning staff found a male body floating on Chu Lake (竹湖) of NCTU at around 7 a.m. and immediately phoned police. The family of the missing 8-year-old boy, Peng Chiang recognized the light yellow shirt and blue checkered pants on the body as the ones he wore on the day he went missing. The victim had been missing since attending a religious event held at NCTU with his Vietnamese mother, Chai Ya-chiao on Nov. 15. He was last seen on the tennis courts of NCTU, playing with other kids after lunch. The mother immediately sought the help of the school to search for the victim around the campus, but did not alert the rest of the family. Other family members only learned of the circumstances after Chai returned home alone. An official missing persons report was not filed with the police until late into the night on the same day. In response to the incident, an official from NCTU said that warning signs as well as buoys are in place around the lake, meeting safety regulations. Devastated, Peng's grandfather retorted and said that kids are incapable of reading the signs, adding that the school surveillance cameras were not helpful, while the safety measures insufficient. The prosecutors' preliminary probe concluded that Peng stumbled and fell into the lake but the cause of death is still to be determined after an investigation. Peng was an only child.
