Hsinchu township mayor wounded in shooting

HSINCHU, Taiwan -- A township mayor in northern Taiwan has been wounded in a shooting that police believe is related to the year-end elections, a report said yesterday.

Lo Chi-kun, mayor of Guanxi in Hsinchu County, was shot in his left leg Friday night by two identified gunmen, the Central News Agency said.

Lo, a Kuomintang candidate running for a seat on the Hsinchu County Council, was rushed to the hospital and was in stable condition after treatment to his wound, CNA said.

Police have already set up an ad hoc task force to investigate the shooting, which they suspect may have been related to the Lo election campaign, CNA said, adding no arrests have been made.
