Man finishes 1,068 hours of community service

HSINCHU, Taiwan -- A young man in Hsinchu County who was previously sentenced to prison for sleeping with his underage girlfriend was recently allowed to serve community service in lieu of incarceration, local media reported yesterday.

The 20-year-old convict, surnamed Liu, who is a member of the Atayal tribe, will complete a record 1,068 hours of hard labor to replace his 6-month jail sentence, said a United Daily News report.

Lin was cited as showing appreciation for the lighter sentence and promised to redeem himself by killing a wild boar and throwing a wedding reception for his girlfriend, 22, and her family.

Parents of Liu girlfriend had asked the young man to slaughter a wild boar and ask for his girlfriend hand in marriage, in accordance with a tribal ritual after discovering that the couple had consummated their relationship, said the report.

The Atayal tribe believes abiding by such a tradition helps ward off bad luck.

Liu, who had no savings and was unable to comply with their wishes, was later reported to authorities by the parents and charged with sexual harassment, the report added.
