English Village begins trial run, serving rural students

TAIPEI -- A scenario-based educational facility for English learning began operations on a trial basis at Wenguang Elementary School in southern Taiwan's Chiayi County, providing rural children with an entirely English-speaking environment.

The European castle-like Chiayi Wenguang International English Village was remodeled from a school building in 2011 at a cost totaling NT$64.6 million (US$2.15 million). The lion's share of the expenses was paid with private donations, according to the school.

These English villages are a great idea but are usually executed poorly. You won't learn English from a week's immersion program or from having one English class a week. I hope people in charge of education in Taiwan stops seeing English as a fun lesson and approach it like an academic subject. Learning through play is fine, but you need substance and for a language, practice outside the classroom.
