Confucius' descendant pursues higher learning in Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Attracted by Taiwan's education system, Kong Wei-qian (孔維倩), the 78th generation of Confucius, came all the way from mainland China to Taiwan and now studies in the National Chung Cheng University.

Kong was a junior and marking major at Jiangxi Normal University in China. She is now an exchange student at the National Chung Cheng University, a sister school with Jiangxi Normal University.

Confucius, born about 2,500 years ago, is often called as "the father of all teachers" in Chinese culture. Kong's middle name "Wei" is universally adopted among those in the 78th generation of Confucius.

Based on family tradition, women usually are not listed in the Confucius' genecology book. However, with the rise of gender equality, and the insistence of her father, Kong's name is now in the family book as well.

Kong maintained close ties with her father, who initially wanted her to become a teacher, just like their ancestor Confucius. However, Kong was more interested in marketing and majored in marketing against her father's wish. The decision ended with a big fight between the father and the daughter.

Kong tried out several sales positions in supermarkets in Jiangxi province. According to Kong, she could have landed an easier job with her father's assistance. But she wanted to train herself through harder work experience. Her ultimate goal is to get in a foreign company on her own.

Kong was impressed by the creativity exhibited in Chung Cheng University's student clubs. Compared with China, Taiwan has more innovative sales and marketing ideas, she said.

There are Kong families in Taiwan as well. The 80th generation Kong You-ren (孔佑仁) was born in Taipei. The 77th generation Kong Teh-cheng (孔德成) was a former president of the Examination Yuan.
