TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A township in Chiayi County honored its exemplary mothers yesterday on the eve of Mother's Day.
A total of 27 mothers received awards from the Putze Township government in recognition of their hard work taking care of their families.
At one point during the award presentation ceremony, the mothers in attendance sat on a row of chairs, with their children kneeling before them and serving them with tea in a gesture of gratitude.
One of the mothers, Chou Pi-hsia, 77, never complained despite the hardships she endured raising her six children, according to her award citation.
Another mother, Huang Shu-pen, 61, has been taking care of her comatose son for 17 years since he had an accident while serving in the military.
The township government said that all award winners were selected by their neighbors.
