Alishan highway sees second fatal CNY accidentThe China Post news staff TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A car accident along the scenic Alishan Highway in Chiayi County on Tuesday left one dead and three suffering from minor injuries.
February 14, 2013, 12:36 am TWN This is the second deadly car accident that had taken place on Alishan Highway within three days during the ongoing Chinese New Year holiday. A 40-year-old driver, surnamed Ouyang, crashed his car into the face of a cliff along the highway at around 3 p.m. Ouyang's mother and his girlfriend, surnamed Tu, as well as his girlfriend's mother were also in the vehicle. Ouyang, his mother and Tu sustained minor injuries, while Tu's mother was left in comma. She was later pronounced dead in a nearby emergency medical treatment center. Medics attributed the cause of her death to serious brain injuries. Initial investigations indicate that the accident had happened because Ouyang was driving while fatigued. Ouyang's father told police that his son and Tu had planned to get married next month. On Sunday, two vehicles ran into each other on the same highway, leaving three dead and 9 suffering from minor and major injuries. Police reminded motorists to follow traffic regulations and to maintain a safe distance from other cars while driving along the Alishan Highway.
