Alishan Railway Zhu Shan Line to resume service

CHIAYI, Taiwan -- The restoration of Alishan Mountain Railway (AMR) Zhu Shan (竹山) line will be finished this month. According to the estimation of the Forestry Bureau (FB), the section will resume service in April at the earliest, after inspections and test runs. But the resumption of the whole railway has to wait till the end of next year.

The 74-km long AMR had been badly damaged by Typhoon Morakot. There were 421 breakages. FB set a NT$100 million budget to restore the rail.

Alishan Forest Recreation Area attracts 700,000 visitors every year, 410,000 of which take the AMR Zhu Shan line. It is very popular for people who go to Alishan to watch the sunrise. The 6.2 km long Zhu Shan line is the least affected segment by Marokot.

The segment between Zhu Qi (竹崎) and Fanqi Lake (奮起湖) will be restored by March next year. The section from Fanqi Lake to Alishan Sacred Tree(阿里山神木) will be restored by the end of next year.

FB said the Fanqi Lake to Sacred Tree section is the most difficult part of the restoration. The biggest destruction of the railroad was 800 meters long, with all the rails having fallen apart.
