VP Siew kicks off Lantern Festival in Chiayi City

CHIAYI, Taiwan -- Vice President Vincent Siew lit the main lantern yesterday evening, kicking off the 2010 Taiwan Lantern Festival in southern Taiwan's Chiayi City.

The Lantern Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the first month of lunar calendar, was celebrated in every corner of the country, with exhibition of lanterns of different styles.

Premier Wu Den-yih and Minister Mao Chi-kuo of Transportation and Communication were also present at the Chiayi carnival which attracted an estimated crowd of 500,000 people.

Meanwhile, in Pinghsi Township in Taipei County in the north, President Ma Ying-jeou, Taipei Magistrate Chou His-wei and Presidential Senior Adviser Cecilia Y. Koo jointly lit a sky lantern while praying for national peace and auspiciousness.

Nearly 100,000 of the sky lanterns painted with blue magpie design — a symbol of auspiciousness — were lit, flying over the sky of the mountainous township.

In the southern Taiwan township of Yenshui, tens of thousands beehive firecrackers were fired in celebration of the festival, the first of its kind in the Chinese calendar after New Year Day.
