Taiwan's largest tiger lantern arrives in Chiayi

CHIAYI, Taiwan -- Tourism Bureau has given Taiwan's biggest tiger lantern in Taiwan this year to Chiayi City, the main organizer of this year's Lantern Festival. The lantern is on display in a showcase at Chiayi train station starting yesterday.

The lantern is 19.3 feet tall and weighs 36 tonnes. Its spiral reflections and digitalized lighting systems make it the most glittering lantern ever. This year's handheld lantern, “Lasting Happiness” (幸福久久), is a cute tiger cub designed like a string puppet. The lantern can turn somersaults, which makes the lantern both pretty and playable.

Taiwan Lantern Festival will have the lighting ceremony at 7 p.m. on Feb. 28. The Lantern Fair will last till 10.30 p.m. on Mar. 7. There will be a lantern light show every 30 minutes throughout the fair.

This year's Lantern fair will extend from Chungshan Road in Chiayi to Chiayi train station. The Tourism Bureau suggested the public to walk along Chungshan Road to the main display area in Chiayi Park to avoid heavy traffics.
