Taiwan Lantern Festival will unfold in Chiayi Park

CHIAYI, Taiwan -- The 2010 Taiwan Lantern Festival (2010台灣燈會) will takes place between Feb. 28 and Mar. 7 in Chiayi Park(嘉義公園) in southern Taiwan's Chiayi City this year.

The co-organizers Chiayi City Government and the Tourism Bureau Ministry of Transportation and Communications have started setting up the event venue as of yesterday.

Director Lai Se-chen from the tourism bureau, Mayor Huang Min-hui attended yesterday's ceremony to pray for a smooth preparation.

The festival is celebrated on the 15th of the first month on the Chinese lunar calendar each year.

The theme of this year's lantern decorations will fuse traditional style with modern technology while incorporating new ideas and cultural values.

One of the designs includes a tiger jumping over a colorful bridge to symbolize the animal as a lucky charm, said the bureau.

The main lantern structure will be 19.3 meter tall and 36 tons in weight. All the lantern structures will apply the newest LED technology and use light reflectors to dazzle the audiences.

The celebration will being 7 p.m. on Feb 28 and last until 10:30 p.m. on Mar 7. The main lantern will perform a lightshow every half hour.
