Alishan reopens to medium-sized tour buses

Medium-sized tour buses are now allowed to travel to the typhoon-ravaged Alishan Mountain area, following the reopening of the area to minibuses last month, the Directorate General of Highways (DGOH) announced yesterday.

Large passenger buses are still forbidden to traverse the area due to safety concerns, according to the DGOH.

The scenic Alishan Forest Recreation Area has been closed since Aug. 5 after the powerful Typhoon Morakot wreaked havoc on the mountainous area, cutting off traffic.

The storm caused severe damage to key roads that connect the area with the outside world.

“Main arterials are already repaired and it seems safe,” said a local tour company operator.

Tourism businesses are looking forward to the reopening of the roads to all buses.

Another disastrous move by the Ma administration.

Several stretches of narrow roads are still planked by severely eroded walls of mountain with falling rocks.

The vibrations from these buses will only worsen the situation.

It's a disaster waiting to happen.
