At a press conference, Premier Wu said the Tourism Bureau is planning to install a cable car relay across landslide-prone sections of the loop railroad built by the Japanese during their occupation of Taiwan to tap hinoki resources at Mount Ali. A feasibility study is being made. “When the plan is confirmed feasible,” Wu said, “we'll establish a cable car service that will be part of the loop railroad.” Wu said the highway from Chiayi to Mount Ali, also damaged during the onslaught of Morakot, will be reopened to bus traffic on September 20. Mount Ali is a must visit of Chinese tourists who have continued to pour in despite the brief lapse due to the tropical typhoon. The number of arrivals from China has risen over the past month.
