Driftwood in Chiayi County open for collecting

CHIAYI, Taiwan -- Driftwood around Hao-mei Township in Chiayi County is available to be collected starting from August 27 and continuing to September 26, the Chiayi Forest District Office announced yesterday.

Interested persons can pick up the wood anytime from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. However, if another natural disaster hits southern Taiwan, the collecting of driftwood must be stopped, added the office.

The office had finished identifying and marking some of the driftwood after Typhoon Morakot passed, with help from the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources of National Chiayi University.

Woods marked as national-owned property, private-owned trees, and other rare species are not allowed to be collected. Such first-class conifers as Taiwan Red False-Cypress and first-class hardwoods, such as Stout Camphor Tree, cannot be lifted.

The office encouraged people to start with small timbers, instead of those of high commercial value. The official also reminded wood-pickers not to damage the standing trees.
