Updated Monday, March 17, 2008 0:00 am TWN, CNA Village chiefs sue DPP lawmakersThe five village chiefs from the county’s Hsinkang township filed the lawsuit with the Chiayi District Court against DPP legislators Lee Chun-yi and Wang Hsing-nan following their accusation Friday that the village chiefs met recently with John Kuan, a vice chairman of the opposition Kuomintang (KMT), and that during the meeting, Kuan asked them to root for KMT presidential candidate Ma Ying-jeou. The two DPP legislators also alleged publicly that Kuan promised to pay NT$300,000-NT$500,000 to them to finance their organization of campaign drives in their respective villages to drum up support for Ma in the run-up to the March 22 presidential election, the village chiefs said. The DPP legislators said Friday that Kuan visited the home of Lin Mao-sheng, chairman of the Hsinkang Farmers’ Association, March 10, during which the five village chiefs “happened” to be there, so Kuan made the offer to them. The village chiefs were accompanied by Lin and the Hsinkang township chief when they filed the lawsuit. Lin, known as a supporter of the “pan-green” camp led by the DPP, denied the accusation and said Kuan visited him March 10 as they are old friends of many years. “Kuan did not mention anything about the presidential election and did not offer vote-buying incentives to the village heads,” Lin added. The village chiefs, meanwhile, said the DPP lawmakers’ accusation was absolutely fabricated, adding that if they were offered money by the KMT vice chairman, they “would rather be struck by lightning and split in two.” | Local Breaking News Most Read |
