He gave the fake coins as change to customers of his lamb shop but this was discovered by the police. Tsai testified to the judge that he knew the coins were counterfeit and that he used the fake coins because life had been hard. If he were doing better, he would have sent the fake coins to the police, he said. The judge said he did not give Tsai a heavier punishment because Tsai had no criminal record and he had economical difficulties, and that the amount involved was only NT$14,450. Besides the prison term, Tsai had to give NT$50,000 to various government agencies and charities. He was also ordered to provide 160 hours of community service.
