Girl has one-third of infected ear amputated

CHANGHUA, Taiwan -- A 17-year-old girl in Changhua had one-third of her inflamed ear removed after getting it pierced at a local store. The doctors diagnosed that her ear was infected with Bacillus Subtilis.

The girl went to an accessories store in Changhua, bought an earring and got it pierced into her upper left ear last month. After a few days, her ear started to swell and oozed pus from the earring pierce. She went to the Chang Bing Show Shwan Memorial Hospital (彰濱秀傳醫院) and underwent five operations having one-third of the infected ear cartilage removed.

Wen Kao-jung (溫高榮), her surgeon, said if the cartilage was not removed, the bacteria may get into her blood and cause sepsis, which can be fatal. The girl will have to undergo more operations to rebuild her ear with cartilage taken from her right ear and ribs after an observation period of three to six months.

Wen said the patient's ear was infected by unclean piercing equipment. He warned the public to make sure that the piercing equipment at the stores they visit is thoroughly sterilized before they get their ears pierced.
