Man plants fake bomb in ATM over missing money

CHANGHUA, Taiwan -- A man placed a fake bomb in front of a bank ATM yesterday in Changhua County in retaliation for the bank allegedly freezing his account, which turned out to be a misunderstanding.

The suspect, surnamed Young, had been fined more than NT$80,000 for traffic violations, so the traffic enforcement agency deducted the amount from his bank account without his knowledge. However, Young thought the money had been taken away from the bank, Sihu Farmer's Association, and angrily placed a bag, labeled with the Chinese words “bomb,” in front of the bank's ATM machine on Oct. 26.

The bank staff found the bag the other morning, and phoned the police immediately. Apparently, Young was just trying to show his anger towards the bank, for the so-called bomb was actually a bag containing firecrackers and an alarm clock.

Police later tracked down Young and charged him with public intimidation.
