Changhua County to set up calligraphy hall

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Changhua county government in central Taiwan plans to establish a calligraphy hall by the middle of the year to promote the ancient Chinese art, a county official said yesterday.

The hall will serve as a venue for calligraphy exhibitions and for workshops designed to help local residents gain a better understanding of the art, said Patrick T.F. Lin, director of the county’s Cultural Affairs Bureau.

The hall will be set up inside the Wenkai Academy, which was inaugurated in the county’s Lukang township in 1824, according to Lin.

The hall plan came after the county government held a recent exhibition of calligraphy collected by a local calligrapher, Lin explained.

Following the conclusion of the exhibition, the calligrapher decided to donate the works to the bureau in the hope that the bureau could find a permanent place to display them, Lin noted.

Lin added that many of the county’s renowned calligraphers came from Lukang.
