Changhua begins discussions on bid to become capital city

CHANGHUA, Taiwan -- The Changhua County government began efforts yesterday to push for the central Taiwan county to become the capital city of the country, with an academic conference.

The conference on issues concerning the Changhua bid and national development was attended by government, industrial and academic representatives, including Examination Yuan President Yao Chia-wen, National Changhua University of Education President Chang Huei-po and Mingdao University President Wang Ta-yung.

In his address, County Magistrate Cho Po-yuan introduced Changhua as enjoying a significant position in Taiwan’s history, noting that its Lugang township was once the second largest city on the island, following Tainan in southern Taiwan.

Changhua, the first Taiwanese county to house a population surpassing one million people, is now the fourth largest county in the nation with a population above 1.3 million people.

In geography, Changhua county lies against the central mountain range, which shields the county from typhoons, allowing it to develop stably, Cho indicated.

The magistrate also mentioned that 88.1 percent of the county has not yet undergone urban renewal, meaning that there is ample space in the county for the construction of political and economic establishments.

Topics on Changhua’s strengths in history, politics, geography, traffic, population, industry, LOHAS (an abbreviation for Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) and balanced development were discussed during the conference.
