Educating to connect with USC

In a new college ranking released jointly by the Wall Street Journal and the Times Higher Education in late September, the University of Southern California (USC) received its highest placement to date — 15th place — out of over 1,000 universities in the U.S.

Among the four pillars of "resources, engagement, environment and outcomes" used to rate higher education institutions, USC stood out for its highly diverse environment and the success of its graduates. Katharine Harrington, vice president of admissions and planning at USC, told The China Post about the school's belief in a warm and welcoming campus and how it has maintained affordability and accessibility during an age of rapid changes, in which reform in higher education has been constantly called for worldwide.

An International Campus

This year, international students from over 50 countries and regions around the world comprise 14 percent of freshmen, immersing students in a global setting the moment they set foot on campus, where a wide scope of academic opportunities are offered, including cinematic arts, biology, business, environmental science, engineering and more.

Harrington described Los Angeles, where USC is located, as "a microcosm of the kind of world that students will live in no matter where they go after they graduate," yielding a thrilling student experience in this urban, diverse, fast-paced environment.

Also, USC considers it more beneficial to students where a faculty is creating and discovering new knowledge in their own fields outside of classrooms, contrary to common views of research and teaching in conflict.
