Int'l Coastal Cleanup Day to see 20,000 participants

TAIPEI -- More than 20,000 people have registered to take part in this year's International Coastal Cleanup Day activities on 27 beaches around the island on Sept. 24, organizers said.

New Taipei's Environmental Protection Department said it was working with private and public groups to help clean up Taiwan's coastal areas as part of an international effort to reduce the pollution of oceans around the globe.

Among the groups participating in this year's event are the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), Tamkang University, the International Rotary Club, the Bliss and Wisdom Buddhist Foundation, Kao Corporation and Everlight Electronics Co., the department said.

Coordinating the Taiwan effort, the department has asked the Buddhist foundation to "adopt" Shazhu Bay in Jinshan and Tamkang University to clean up Yangchouzi Beach in Tamsui.
