'Aboot' time: Taipei Canucks celebrate Canada Day on Sat.

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The annual Canada Day celebrations event, one of the largest outdoor national day celebrations held locally, will be staged in Taipei this Saturday to mark 149 years since Canada's founding, Canada's representative office said on Wednesday.

Speaking during a press event to announce the "Celebration Canada 2016," David Bostwick, acting executive director of the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei (CTOT), said the 11th annual event will again be held at the Hakka Cultural Park in Taipei.

The official said Canada and Taiwan enjoy a robust relationship with strong trade and good people-to-people ties.

"The event is opened to Canadians, Taiwanese and all friends of Canada," he said.

This year is especially important as the CTOT is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the opening of the office, Bostwick said.

The office was first established in 1986 with a mandate to facilitate trade ties between both countries in the absence of official diplomatic ties.

As always, this year's free-entry event will feature Canadian outdoor lifestyle, live music, food, drinks and sport, the CTOT said.

The event is to be divided into five zones: a plaza zone, a Canadian food zone, an art zone, a kids' zone where a bouncy castle will be erected, and a hockey zone, and will also feature a mechanical bull.

The mechanical bull-riding competition has always been the most popular attraction during the annual event, with the winner getting a round-trip air ticket to Canada, the CTOT said.

The event, to be held from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, will conclude with a wrap-up firework show in the evening.

According to the office, Taiwan is Canada's 12th largest trading partner and the fifth largest in Asia. There are a total of 60,000 Canadians currently residing in Taiwan.
