Lion-dancing troupe slated to tour Europe

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A Taiwanese traditional lion-dancing troupe will be touring Europe starting later this week to showcase Taiwan's soft power, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said yesterday.

To improve relations between Taiwan and Europe, MOFA invited Team Win Lion Dance Theater (廷威醒獅劇團) to tour Europe from Aug. 14 to Sept. 2 the MOFA said yesterday.

In a press conference held yesterday at MOFA's headquarters in Taipei, Vice Foreign Minister Vanessa Shih (史亞平) said that recently there have been many disasters around the world.

Taiwan itself experienced the TransAsia Airways crash and Kaohsiung blasts, she noted. MOFA hopes that the lion-dancing performance, a symbol of luck in Chinese culture, can bring positive energy and blessings to Europe.

Team Win was founded by Chen Suen-chi (陳順吉) 13 years ago. The troupe has earned several local and international awards. It was previously invited to perform at the World Expo in 2012 in South Korea.

The upcoming trip will see the Team Win Lion Dance Theater stage eight performances in four countries, namely Latvia, Estonia, Finland and Sweden. MOFA hopes its unique performances will encourage Europeans to travel to Taiwan and embrace Taiwanese culture.
