British, Hungarian parliamentarians commence visit to Taiwan

TAIPEI -- Parliamentarians from Hungary and the United Kingdom are visiting Taiwan to promote bilateral exchanges and advance cooperation, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

A delegation from the Hungary-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Association, led by Chairman Arpad Janos Potapi, is on a six-day visit to Taiwan that will last until Saturday, the ministry said in a statement Tuesday.

The delegation will call on Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng, Vice Foreign Minister Vanessa Shih, and other officials with the education and economics ministries, the Council of Agriculture, and the semi-official Straits Exchange Foundation, which is responsible for negotiations with China, the ministry said.

The trip is aimed at increasing the delegation's understanding of Taiwan's political and economic environment, and discussing ways to further bilateral economic, agricultural, sports, cultural, and educational cooperation, the ministry said.

At the same time, a parliamentary delegation from Britain's House of Commons is visiting Taiwan from July 27 to Aug. 2, the ministry said.
