New Japanese envoy will assume office on July 22

TOKYO -- A former Japanese ambassador to Myanmar has been assigned to head the Taipei office of the Japan Interchange Association, the representative office of Japan in Taiwan in the absence of official diplomatic ties, according to Japanese diplomatic sources.

Mikio Numata will take over the post to be vacated by Sumio Tarui, who has headed the office since April 2012 and will conclude his term July 14. Numata is scheduled to assume office July 22, the sources said.

The Interchange Association was established as Japan's de facto embassy in Taiwan after diplomatic ties between the two countries were severed in 1972.
