TAIPEI -- Taiwan has extended congratulations to the newly elected members of the European Parliament and aims to continue its effort to improve ties with Europe under the new European Parliament, a Taiwanese official said Thursday.
On behalf of the Republic of China, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs congratulated the winners of the European parliamentary elections, said Zhang Ming-zhong, director-general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Department of European Affairs, at a regular news briefing.
The poll took place across the 28-nation European Union from May 22-25 to elect members of the 751-seat European Parliament.
Zhang said some members of the existing European Parliament-Taiwan Friendship Group were re elected. Taiwan will continue its efforts to engage them and will seek to develop relationships with the newly elected parliamentarians in a bid to strengthen ties between Taiwan and Europe, he added.
The parliament is one of the EU's main law-making institutions. It also plays an important role in the development of ties between Taiwan and Europe.
The European Parliament has expressed support for an economic cooperation agreement between Taiwan and the European Union and Taiwan's participation in international organizations.
