Sao Tome and Principe, ROC discuss new projects

TAIPEI -- Taiwan and Sao Tome and Principe are contemplating new projects in which they can work together, including the construction of a hospital in the West African island country, a Taiwanese official said yesterday.

The two allies are still talking about project ideas and are expected to finalize the details by the end of this year, said Jacques Wu, a senior official with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Department of West Asian and African Affairs, at a regular news briefing.

Wu's remarks came in response to questions on a visit by Sao Tome and Principe's Foreign Minister Natalia Pedro da Costa Umbelina Neto to Taiwan earlier this month.

Among the issues discussed during a meeting between Foreign Minister David Lin and his Sao Tomean counterpart were the construction of a specialized hospital, a sports center and high schools in the African country, Wu said.

Taiwan sent a delegation to Sao Tome and Principe in March to learn more about the needs of the local people and is planning to dispatch another delegation later this year, he said.
