Gov't sends condolences over deadly ferry sinking

TAIPEI -- The Taiwan government has expressed its condolences over South Korea's deadly ferry sinking incident earlier last week that left hundreds missing and dozens dead, while the search-and-rescue work continues.

Taiwan's Foreign Minister David Lin expressed condolences to South Korea's representative to Taiwan, Chung Sang-ki, after the ferry Sewol sank on April 16, according a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, issued over the weekend.

Taiwan also offered to provide assistance to help with South Korea's rescue efforts, the ministry said.

The Republic of China (Taiwan) government "expresses its condolences to the victims' families, and hopes that more people will be rescued," the statement read.

ROC Representative to South Korea Benjamin Liang also sent a condolence message to South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ministry said, adding that South Korea has expressed its gratitude in return.
