Canada parliamentarians to visit Taiwan this week

TAIPEI -- A group of Canadian parliamentarians is set to visit Taiwan this week to learn more about the island's political and economic development and relations across the Taiwan Strait, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The group is led by Chungsen Leung, a member of the House of Commons, and is joined by Senator Michael MacDonald, along with Bev Shipley, Russ Hiebert and John Williamson, from the House of Commons, the ministry said in a recent statement.

During their April 14-19 visit, they are scheduled to meet with President Ma Ying-jeou and Taiwanese lawmakers, as well as call on officials with the ministries of foreign affairs, education, economic affairs, the Council of Agriculture and the Straits Exchange Foundation, a quasi-official organization to handle negotiations across the Taiwan Strait on behalf of Taiwan, the ministry said.

The ministry said the visit will help increase the parliamentarians' understanding of issues surrounding the Taiwan-Canada relationship, while advancing bilateral ties.
