Fulbright regional meeting kicks off 1st time in Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The 2014 Fulbright East Asia Pacific Meeting kicked off Wednesday in Taiwan, marking the first time that the event has taken place in the country.

Organized by the Foundation for Scholarly Exchange, the Taipei event has brought American officials from throughout the region to discuss a variety of issues related to the administration of the United States' Fulbright academic exchange program, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) said.

The meeting takes place every three or four years, said AIT, which represents U.S. interests in Taiwan in the absence of formal diplomatic ties.

Participants in the three-day conference include key diplomacy officials, such as Susan Stevenson, deputy assistant secretary of state for public diplomacy in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, AIT said.

Stevenson's visit is set to last March 23-27, during which time she will meet with Taiwanese officials to discuss and affirm the strength of the U.S.-Taiwan relationship, AIT said.

Approved by Congress in 1946, the Fulbright Program is considered one of the most prestigious scholarship awards programs worldwide, operating in over 155 countries.
