KAOHSIUNG -- Two Japanese men who were total strangers before they met in Taiwan in February on a trip to express gratitude for Taiwan's aid to their country following the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami traveled to the southern city of Kaohsiung Monday as part of their separate journeys of thanks.
Shunsuke Hagiwara, a college senior from Tokyo, and Daisuke Kaneko, a former fashion designer, visited Kaohsiung City Council, the Genesis Social Welfare Foundation's branch in the city's Fengshan District and the Li-Chih Valuable School, dressed in t-shirts printed with Chinese characters expressing appreciation for the generosity Taiwanese people showed following the catastrophe.
Hagiwara, who arrived Feb. 27 on the same flight as Kaneko by chance, said he decided to embark on a round-Taiwan trip three years ago in the belief that “a person should express his gratitude in time and not be shy.”
