Limited impact expected on Malaysia travel: group

TAIPEI -- Travel between Taiwan and Malaysia is unlikely to suffer heavy impact in the wake of the March 8 disappearance of a Malaysia Airlines flight, as no direct evidence suggests that the Southeast Asian country is being targeted by terrorists.

Only a limited short-term setback is expected, mostly as a result of the immediate shock to the public, according to Lo Kuo-hua, an official of Taiwan's Travel Quality Assurance Association.

However, since the upcoming April-June period is traditionally a low season for travel to Malaysia by Taiwanese people, market performance is likely to be weak, Lo said.

A typical five-day group trip to the country during the low season can range between NT$18,500 (US$609) and NT$25,000, according to the association.
